My friend James Day took this photograph with his 8" Reflector from very near where I observed the event in South Australia with my Meade ETX105. More soon...
Mars Perihelic Opposition August 27 2003
On August 27, 2003 at 09:46:18 UTC (19:46:18 Australian EST) Mars was in Perihelic Opposition with the Earth. This is the closest Mars has been to Earth in over 50,000 years (55,760,000 Km). Visit the Planetary Society Mars Watch 2003 site for much more detail.
A note on the annual "mars as big as a full moon" hoax:
Every year since this 2003 event there has been an email hoax going around claiming that on August 27 Mars will be as big as a full moon. It is simply a stupid hoax email designed as a chain letter. Do not send it on. Even on August 27, 2003 when it was at it brightest for many years, it was nowhere near the size and brightness of a full moon - the very thought that this could happen is nonsensical given the relative size and distances of the two bodies from Earth.
